Genetic Therapies

Instructors: Dr. Andrea Amalfitano D.O., Ph.D and Dr. Vilma Yuzbasiyan-Gurkan Ph.D
Date and Time: Wednesdays from 3:30 - 5:00 p.m.
Location: 1425 Biomedical Physical Sciences

Each session will be composed of student presentations (2-3 students per session).

Students will select or be assigned to topics. With oversight and approval of course instructors, the students will select current papers addressing important issues and provide background material and critic of the paper. The course will be in two parts. Part I will focus on vectors used in gene transfer, and Part II will focus on applications of gene transfer for different diseases.

Each session in Part I should address benefits and/or limitations of each vector.

Each session in Part II should address the potential and/or limitations of specific applications currently employed.

All students will be expected to attend a special “Symposium on Gene Transfer” at the end of the semester, dates to be determined, tentatively targeting Saturday, May 3 or Saturday, May 10 th .

Session Topics:

Part I: Gene Transfer Vector Technologies

  1. Non-viral
  2. Retrovirus
  3. Lentivirus
  4. Adenovirus
  5. Adeno-Associated Virus
  6. Herpes Virus

Part II: Gene Transfer Applications:

  1. Cardiovascular
  2. Hepatic
  3. Musculo-skeletal
  4. Neurological

Molecular & Cellular Mechanisms of Carcinogenesis & Mutagenesis

Instructors: Dr. Justin McCormick and Dr. Veronica Maher
Date and Time: Thursdays from 3:00 – 4:50 p.m.
Place: 162 Food Safety and Toxicology Building

This is a graduate level seminar course designed to give students an in-depth understanding of the process by which normal cells become cancer cells (carcinogenesis) and the cellular and molecular mechanisms responsible for induction of changes in the genome of eukaryotes (mutagenesis) and for avoiding such mutagenesis.
