I don't know what I want to do with my life. Where can I get help?
Congratulations! You’re normal. Most people have questions about the future, and their role in it.
The Career Development Center (CDC) provides personal career advising and career information. Whether you want to decide on a major, a career, or simply to learn about various occupations, you can get help assessing your interests, personality traits, and skills so that you make informed decisions about your major choice and career goals.
You might want to visit the Counseling Center, or talk to your academic advisor. You also might want to read about self-assessment tools on this website.
What services do career advisors offer?
Career advisors provide support, skill development, information, and encouragement for students at all class levels. You can meet with career advisors for general questions about resumes, interviewing, and researching careers and choosing a major. You can also ask about strategies for choosing a graduate school, finding an internship, or job hunting.
If you need help proofreading your resume, writing cover letters, or tips on interviewing, any of the career advisors can help you out. The advice doesn’t change much from field to field on those topics.
For advanced help with job searching , Dr. Gwen Pearson is the science and math career consultant for the College of Natural Science.

Note: In order to meet with an advisor, we ask that you also be registered with MSU SpartanTRAK. This allows us to have your basic information (class level, major, etc.) to assists the advisor to prepare his/her advice before your visit. This also helps us keep a record for future visits to our office.
What should I expect during my first visit?
During the first session, you and your career advisor will work together to identify your concerns and goals. The career advisor may ask you questions about your career history, academic background, interests, and other factors relating to the choice of a career field or academic major.
Career advisors don’t have all the answers, and they won’t tell you what you should do. They can help you find the resources you need to make an informed decision about your academic and career choices.
Does the Career Development Center provide academic advice?
Well, Yes and No. Each academic unit is responsible for academic advising for its students. You and your academic advisor will decide on your schedule and determine if you are on track for degree completion. Career advisors can NOT tell you what specific classes count for your degree, or help you schedule courses.
If, however, you are uncertain about academic career decisions of a general nature, please come in and talk with us. We can give advice about what skills are in demand by employers, which might affect your course choices. We can also help you find out what sorts of jobs certain majors typically get.
